Resonance

Each month in downtown Toronto, TAKOTOOK, an Iranian music gathering, becomes more than a stage, offering a displaced community resilience, belonging, and a voice long silenced at home.
Resonance is a short documentary showcasing Dariush Azar and Rubina's performances at TAKOTOOK and the community that this event created. The film starts hours before the show during set-up and ends hours after the show where the audience gathers in the parking lot. It features interviews from the performers, organizers, and audience describing what the event means to them and how it plays an important role in retaining Iranian culture. Especially considering the censorship and authoritarianism that Iran is currently faced with. The film documents the strong sense of community built around the event and the people that help make it happen telling a story of a resilient displaced community expressing their art and culture

The Team

Picture
The reason I wanted to make this film is because Takotook felt like a rare place where a community creates its own voice. It’s not just about the music; it’s a living example of how culture survives when people build it together. I wanted to capture that energy and give it the visibility it deserves.
In a way, this project isn’t just about them, it’s about all of us who are still learning what “home” means.

As a performer the film connected with me because of the brave artists that it spotlights and the community built around music. I wanted the challenge to represent the community through production design.

I found a connection with Resonance through its powerful portrayal of community. As Iranian musicians and artists face restrictions in their home country, the Takotook event provides a safe and intimate environment for free expression. I felt inspired seeing the effect this event has on the Iranian community in Toronto.
Takotook and the community it holds were unknown to me before I heard about this project. After diving deeper into the event and the importance of keeping it alive in Toronto, I knew I wanted to help share this story. Everyone should see the bravery of the artists and the power held in their artistic expression, knowing they may not be able to do this in Iran. Resonance shares a story of Iranian artists portraying pride and celebration in what they do, something you do not often see in the mainstream media.

When Aria told me about Takotook & his pitch, I immediately felt how meaningful the story was. This film highlights community and the way music can bring people together, and that deeply resonated with me.
I chose to be part of this film because I think it’s an important story to tell and its cultural significance can make people feel welcome and seen.

Resonance connected with me through the way Aria described the community that built and surrounds Takotook. I choose to work on this documentary because I wanted to support presenting the vibrant community of Takotook through sound design.

Picture
I was inspired by how so many individual stories and experiences are united and shared through takotook.
I wanted to contribute to this project because I believe this film will serve to help connect more people searching for a authentic community and a home away from home

I joined this film because I’m south Asian and I love south Asian music so the opportunity to highlight that through editing a doc was too good to pass up.

Resonance connected with me because I'm fascinated with Iranian culture and the displaced community was really interesting to me. I chose to work on the project to find unique ways to tell the story through other forms of media
