HOW GREAT THOU ART

a film by Kieran Persaud

After facing a Parkinson’s diagnosis Dalchan and his family endure a faith testing journey where they must find the light amidst an adverse situation.
In the face of worsening Parkinson's symptoms, a resilient family shares their enduring journey of love, perseverance and strengthened faith as they’ve navigated the challenges of their father/grandfather's diagnosis. The family reflects on their experience and speaks to the despairing times and how despite the adversities there is so much to be thankful for.  How Great Thou Art delves into how maintaining an optimistic and hopeful outlook, as well as spending time with their loved one in exercises, conversation and prayer has proven to be extremely beneficial in Dalchan’s progress with his diagnosis.

ABOUT PARKINSON'S DISEASE

Parkinson's Disease Overview: Parkinson's disease is a brain disorder characterized by unintended or uncontrollable movements, including shaking, stiffness, and coordination difficulties.

Symptoms and Progression: Symptoms typically start gradually and worsen over time, affecting walking, speech, and causing mental, behavioral, sleep, and memory issues.
Risk Factors: While the cause is unclear, Parkinson's may affect more men than women, and age is a significant risk factor, with early-onset forms sometimes being inherited.

Underlying Causes: Parkinson's results from impaired or dying nerve cells in the basal ganglia, leading to reduced dopamine production, which causes movement problems. Loss of norepinephrine also contributes to non-movement symptoms.

Diagnosis: There are no definitive blood tests for Parkinson's, and diagnosis relies on medical history, neurological examination, and positive response to medication. Differential diagnosis is crucial to rule out similar disorders.

There is no cure for this disease, however there are ways to treat the symptoms and prevent them from worsening. Consistant excerises and regularly using your bodies functions and mobility on a daily-routine basis helps prevent the loss of those functions. Maintaining a positive mindset, whether it be through big things like faith and family or the more minute things like still having certain functions and mobiltites to be grateful for, goes a long way in fighting this disease.

DALCHAN PERSAUD and PARKINSON'S DISEASE

1.Parkinson’s Disease is a neurodegenerative disorder that primarily affects movement control. It is a chronic and progressive condition, symptoms are typically known to worsen over time. Symptoms include: Postural instability, tremors, muscle rigidity, autonomic dysfunction. There is no cure for this condition. (National Institute on Aging)

2.Dalchan Persaud received a Parkinson’s diagnosis in 2014 after experiencing light symptoms that were not cause for immediate concern.  3.In 2021 Dalchan’s symptoms began to rapidly worsen, taking a greater toll on his mobility and his ability to fulfill what he could normally do in his day to day life.

4.Since early 2022 Dalchan as well as my grandmother, with age and the worsening progression of Dal’s symptoms, have needed more assistance. My family and extended family have been more than willing to help.

5.Helping and caring for a family member with Parkinson's is not burdensome. Through my experience, helping my grandfather has been an opportunity to spend time with him and to reciprocate the love that he has given.
