Outside Looking In
The earnest struggle and perseverance of Ryan, a survivor of an opioid addiction whose story sheds light on the urgency of an issue affecting millions.
Although doctors prescribe opioids to their patients for pain management, their addictive component can often cause more harm than good. The opioid crisis is the concerning trend that has emerged over the past three decades, wherein millions of people struggle with addiction to opioids, and resulting in alarming rates of deaths due to overdose. “Since 2016, there have been more than 9,000 apparent opioid-related deaths. In 2017, approximately 11 lives were lost each day because of opioid overdoses. This documentary follows RYAN (21) using his story as an example of how easy opioid addiction can be. After going through the experience of opioid addiction firsthand, Ryan does research to educate himself about the use of prescribed opioids, addiction, and overdose. To acquire the opinion of a professional, Ryan even reaches out to a pharmacist asking questions regarding opioids and its addictive property.

Hey everyone, my name’s Marko Davidović and I’m the editor for Outside Looking In. As someone who has had people close to me suffer from addiction, I think it’s important that more awareness is brought to the issue and to the fact that those affected by it often have to go through it alone. I’m super excited to be working on this project and to have the opportunity to help tell Ryan’s story!
