What does it mean to be feminine?

As four people sit down and discuss their youth, they look back at how the concept of femininity was presented to them, and how their preconceived notions have changed over time.

Picture
A short documentary that provides an intimate look into four subjects as they discuss what being feminine is to them. Through themes of being yourself and individuality, the audience can glance into each subject's youth as they learn societal ideologies and how slowly they see themselves developing their own views.

This 6-minute documentary will not only allow the subjects to express their internal emotions but act as an outlet for anyone who is struggling to except themself for precisely who they are! Laughs will be had, tears will be shed, and love will be shown!

Our goal for this documentary is to encourage open-minded conversation of what it means to be feminine and how the definition changes from person to person.

I am so happy to direct this project and have it come to life! Be Your Feminine is a concept I've had in my brain for a while and having this amazing crew to help back all my ideas is incredible! Femininity is in everyone and getting comfortable with your own is so important. It’s all about what you feel, not what the world makes you feel, and once you get confidence within yourself, the world becomes your playground!

I am thrilled to have played a part in bringing Be Your Feminine to life. This film challenges the stereotypes and assumptions that come with the concept of femininity. The hardworking crew and wonderful subjects bring a powerful conversation to light. As a woman myself, I think femininity is like a superpower. I define femininity as one's ability to be open and in touch with not only their own but others emotions and feelings. I think femininity is something everyone has in them, regardless of gender or sexual identity, and is something we should all be proud of!

I am elated to be a part of this project as picture editor. I really don’t have a definition for femininity because it feels like it can be so vast yet feminine is still used to describe mostly traditionally feminine things. When I think of femininity, I do mainly think of traditionally feminine aesthetics, with the exception of oppressive aspects of it of course, however I love to listen to others who’s ideas of femininity look different from mine.

I am honoured to be a part of Be Your Feminine. This documentary strives to explore a concept that is abundant within our world, yet is surprisingly difficult to correctly define. As a cisgender man, I believe that femininity's definition is something that I have no say in. That being said, I have made efforts to get in touch with my femininity, and I continue to explore what that means for myself. Regardless of gender or pronouns, I believe that femininity can be found within everyone.

Being apart of this production has been a blast. Being able to help write this film while learning more about femininity has been a wonderful process. To me, being feminine is the ability to be more in touch with your true self, something everyone can do that, and I hope this film is able to give people that feeling

It was such a pleasure to work on such a wonderful set with the loveliest cast and crew. To me femininity is about care, love, and patience. I think everyone has femininity within them and being raised in a society that considers it demeaning makes it hard to get in touch with that. Femininity is a beautiful part of everyone that deserves time and respect and I'm so glad this documentary is exploring that:)

Being able to explore people different ideas on femininity while working with an amazing crew has been a blast. To me femininity is beauty and kindness. It is an opening up to emotions and free self expression. An acceptance of self and an overall air of empathy and care. Being feminine has been treated as a weakness for so long, but I think is it opens up a new avenue of strength to embrace aspects of yourself that are more gentle, kind and feminine.

I played football which surrounded me with very masculine friends, at times making me uncomfortable with expressing femininity to the point where I'd ignore it. Artists like Tyler, the Creator and Lil Uzi Vert played a big part in helping me be more comfortable, especially with more 'feminine' fashion. I watched the culture shift from "boy's don't do that, that's girly" to the point where I felt comfortable painting my nails, dyeing my hair pink and getting my nose pierced without thinking anything of it. I learned the life lesson, to do what makes you happy and be yourself! Don't let people put you in a box!

Growing up with a twin sister, femininity has always surrounded my life. Wither through my sister, my mother, or any of the other strong women in my life, I was raised the idea that femininity was simply qualities to be had and not something to be shunned as many other boys my age had believed while growing up.
While I was a late edition to this crew, I fully agree and support any platform that encourages meaningful conversation about topics like those Be Your Feminine covers.

Being the director of photography on Be Your Feminine was a super fun experience and I’m excited for everyone to watch it! Up until now, I haven’t tried to define femininity but I believe it’s more a form of expression related to the most intimate thoughts and emotions of any individual. I’d be curious to hear what others definitions of it are.

Hey! I'm Rowan (he/him) one of the camera operators for this (oh) sweetest of films. To me femininity is an integral part of being. The word encapsulates so much, but what first comes to mind is a wisdom and strength in the realm of emotional intelligence that everyone needs.

Growing up I always had issues expressing my femininity, I was concerned it would compromise my gender expression and identity. With age and maturity, I have learned how to embrace the feminine features and aspects of my life. There is a warmth and gentleness to femininity I think everyone possesses and I feel grateful for being in touch with mine.
