A college student recounts her journey to adopting a rescue dog despite the many hurdles along the way and how her new-found best friend has changed her outlook on mental health.

Laura Johnston (20) is a young and determined college student residing in Oakville, Ontario with her supportive father Paul Johnston (57) and rescue dog Marty (4). She recounts her journey to adopting Marty and some of the hurdles she endured while applying to adopt to several rescue agencies. As Laura dives into how she was given the opportunity to adopt Marty, she reveals that he is in fact not her dog, nor could he be without her father.
Laura’s father, Paul explains the unique ownership situation that allowed Laura to adopt, despite the age restrictions. As the film progresses, Laura opens up about her struggles with mental health. Recalling the events that occurred when her mother was diagnosed with cancer and how those events lead to a mental health disorder diagnosis, Laura reflects upon how Marty has become a huge support in her mental health journey. As the film comes to a close, Laura reminisces on her continuously growing bond with Marty as they grow closer together and prove that college students can be suitable dog owners. |
