TRUE COLOURS
When he discovers a deformity in his chameleon's hips, Will travels around the province in an investigative tour-de-force to dismantle the chameleon poaching industry in order to save his best friend.
You walk into a pet shop and come across the reptiles. As you’re browsing, one animal stands out from the rest. As it navigates its branch, surveying the perimeter, you think your eyes are playing tricks on you as its hue slowly shifts. Then suddenly, both its eyes begin to cooperate as it shoots out a tongue as long as its body, catching a fly in a fraction of a second. In this moment you are taken in by its beauty, but this beauty disguises the true ugliness of chameleon domestication.
This documentary is about the pitfalls and ethicality of chameleon ownership and will help to educate and inform those who are unaware of the potential danger. The central structure of this film is the relationship between a pet owner and his chameleon. Two central storylines are shown in parallel. The pet industry’s inhumane practices mirror the discovery of how chameleon husbandry affects a pet-owner. This is illustrated with both personal experiences as well as interviews with experienced owners and professionals. Captive chameleons require a precise balance of lighting, supplements, humidity, nutrition, living space and can even perish from general stress. Not being endemic to the Americas, the chameleon was never designed to exist here in captivity. Their appealing attributes have made chameleons very popular pets, but inexperienced and unprepared owners has made them one of the easiest pets to neglect. A vast array of ailments is put on display on forum websites from upset owners asking what they did wrong. The primary purpose of this documentary is less the malpractice of the chameleon industry, and more to inform pet owners, who will hopefully be guided to more pragmatic and educated decisions after viewing. These issues can and do happen to average people, and what's important is how we deal with these issues now that we are educated. The documentary persuades others to be more conscientious, and educate themselves before entering into a pet/owner relationship. |
