I Want My Voice Black
Three Toronto locals discuss the abuse of vocal blackface within the city.
Toronto slang and “The Toronto Man Accent” have been considered to be the emblem of the city and something for everyone’s participation except the people behind its popularity. Time and time again, the efforts of Black people are shared with the world and people of other cultural backgrounds then use it, treat it like it is a trend or an aesthetic, then completely disregard it and move on. Black people constantly have been left to pick up the pieces with being labeled as “hoodlums”, “ghetto”, and “too black”. I Want My Voice Black shares the stories of three Black Toronto locals of different ethnic and social backgrounds and their thoughts on the matter and how we can create a line between appreciation and appropriation.
