Magic-Ian

Magician and entertainer, Magic Ian takes us through suspension of disbelief and why
sometimes, people love being lied to.
Magic-Ian is a short documentary exploring what is arguably the largest question of magic; how can magic, a genre built on lying, bring so much joy and whimsicality to those that cross it? Magic has become a cultural marker regarding the relationship between a figure that opens the show with stating that as a magician, by association they are going to spend the remainder of their time fooling you. Moreover, that you will carry your end by suspending disbelief for your mutual enjoyment.

The Team

Picture
Sam Batterbury is a documentary filmmaker that loves emphasize how thinking with whimsicality first is the most enjoyable way to live. As an editor and visual effects artist, Sam regularly uses the rules of magic in order to positively fool audience members.

Picture
Hubert Maliszewski, Co-director, was a driving creative force both on and off-set. He propped up Sam throughout the process and collaborated with all departments to bring a scope to the final project.

Picture
Seth, Director of Photography,
focusing entirely on the proper use of camera in his post-secondary career, he's ONE of the reasons Magic-Ian looks so good in this doc. Once on set, he made a lens cap disappear for 3 hours! only to later reappear in his pocket. Must be magic!

Picture
Ryan, Producer, is the brain and the money behind this operation. He was quintessential in organizing and developing the story on this production. With his fingers in everything, he's the glue that holds us all together, and a magician when it comes to the books.

Picture
Taylor Habel is a BFTV student specializing in camera, editing and directing. On this documentary she got to play around in the roll of camera. She has always been a strong believer in the ways of magic, Magic Ian blew her mind even further with his 3 am Trick, she has lost sleep every night since.

Picture
Zacky Makeen,
Post sound,
was instrumental in the final audio mix to make sure you heard all of the jingles of the rings and shuffling of the cards. Magic!

Picture
Evan Droog, Sound department, is THE waveform wizard on set. His trick? A boom magically appearing in frame out of thin air. 3rd Year BFTV sound major, with a heart full of funnies and a stomach full of rocks.

Picture
.Dominic, set design, is an Honors Graduate of Visual Merchandising and 3rd Year Student of Sheridan's Bachelor of Film and Television. There’s little he’s willing to believe on a whim, but when Magic Ian pulled a whole deck of cards in half with a tiny plunger, and his card lay belly up - he had no other choice.

Picture
Andrew Strachan, assistant editor, organized footage and mystically put everything together in  nice and tidy bins. File management may not be the most exciting trick, but it is the most important.

Sheridan College. Bachelor of Film and TV Program. 2024.
