The Monkeys Paw

A local Toronto bookstore stays afloat in the digital age by offering antique, obscure, and even surprise books.

In a world where screens have seemingly replaced paperback, Stephen Fowler strives to preserve the excitement and mystery of old 20th century printed works. His store, The Monkey’s Paw, is home to the strangest works and yet, people continue to visit and enjoy the space. You will often find the book you didn’t even know you were looking for. These books and printed works that have been long forgotten can achieve a new life and be appreciated once again.
This documentary will follow and reveal how Stephen works to keep his business alive. It will follow Stephen as he goes about his daily tasks, such as acquiring these obscure books for the store and the qualifications it must meet to be apart of the collection.  This documentary  shows the importance of preserving historical artifacts. This will shed a light on the unique store and show audiences a new way to look at books.

Bianca Harris
Producer
Hello! My name is Bianca Harris and I’m the producer of the Monkey Paw documentary. I wanted to work on this doc because I found it to be interesting on how this particular bookstore is different from a normal bookstore. It’s unique in a way that carries old fashion books that are hard to find and I wanted my crew to explore that story so that we can see it unfold.
