Confident: Bryan's Story
A young man goes on an educational journey on what it means to be confident in who you truly are, living in Toronto as a minority.
Bryan Andreas is one of the most confident people you’ll ever meet. But people see him as a threat and are genuinely surprised by how confident he is in himself. For people like Bryan it isn’t normal to be that way. He is both black and gay, usually people of that minority are insecure in themselves, but for Bryan to get to his level of confidence wasn’t a breeze through the park. All throughout elementary and middle school he was bullied and got into numerous fights, he felt like he didn’t fit in and was picked on for being more feminine then any of the other guys. Masculinity was a huge issue growing up for him. As he moved into high school his whole family dynamic changed, his brother (who is diagnosed with schizophrenia) had his first mental breakdown, but these high school years were also some of the best years for Bryan. Through grade 10, 11, 12 he became one of the most popular people at the school, for him being accepted by a lot of people, meant that he felt like he could be himself. Even though to this day he still doesn’t truly knows who he is, but do any of us really? The overall message is that you shouldn’t worry about what other people think of you, its okay to be insecure, being confident is a slow and painful process, but it will come one day.
